Will ChatGBT break the internet?

It feels now they every other article is about ChatGPT, so many use cases, particular in my space LowCode.
But with all ground breaking technology I think there is going to be some turbulence, and not in the job market that most people think.

We have already seen the question around who owns the data training AI models, with Getty suing Stable Diffusion https://www.theverge.com/2023/1/17/23558516/ai-art-copyright-stable-diffusion-getty-images-lawsuit, but with the launch of Bing search with ChatGBT we moved to another level.

Recently Google has had run ins with news agencies, particularly in France and Australia. With the news companies (rightfully or wrongly) wanting a cut of advert revenue Google was making from showing their news articles. With Bing and ChatGBT we now have every website on the internet used to deliver search information, not only bypassing the host site (and it's chance for advert revenue) but not even recognising the author. I write my blogs to share knowledge and not for profit, but would I be happy others sharing it without crediting me, no.

If Bing search with ChatGBT takes off, and it looks like it will, suddenly the whole internet could easily become one or two websites. And if this happens then why would any add based information site continue?

I see 4 possible outcomes:

  1. Sharing model similar to news, with Bing (or Google with Bard) showing all the adverts and sharing revenue with the sites. Having a handful of businesses controlling the internet doesn't sound good (it's bad enough now), never mind how difficult it would be to create that payment model.

  2. Every site would go behind a payroll, no more free sites paid for by adverts. Another very unpleasant thought, as the barrier to entry for new sites would be high.

  3. Encryption/Captcha used to stop all web scraping. This would protect the status quo the most, but would impact discovery massively.

  4. Exit from the internet (admittedly most unlikely), with the internet no longer profitable companies would move back to news letter/ paper / digital streaming.

What's everyone's thoughts?
